Common Tools Needed for Wallpaper Application

Common Tools Needed for Wallpaper Application

There are numerous positive qualities of modern wallpaper today, and one of these is how easy it is for homeowners to apply it without any specialized training. There are multiple forms of quality wallpaper that can be easily applied to surfaces by homeowners -- all you'll need to do so is the wallpaper itself and a few potential tools.

At Wallpaper Warehouse, we're happy to offer a wide range of wallpaper styles, colors and adhesive formats, including several that are easy for anyone to apply with the right tools. What are these tools, and how are they used? Here's a rundown based on a few important wallpaper categories.

Wallpaper Smoothing Tools

As anyone who has applied wallpaper in the past is well aware, smoothing is one of the most important steps in the process. A few bumps or creases in the paper can easily become magnified over time, and a well-smoothed surface is key to an attractive installation.

There are a few different tools that can be used for this step:

  • Wallpaper smoother: The most common item used here is simply known as a wallpaper smoother. This is a handheld tool with a flat, rubberized surface that helps to press the paper against the wall and remove any air bubbles or wrinkles.
  • Wallpaper brush: A wallpaper brush is similar to a paintbrush, but with bristles that are specifically designed to smooth wallpaper. It's helpful for getting into tight corners or areas that are difficult to reach with a smoother.
  • Wallpaper scraper: A wallpaper scraper is a metal or plastic blade that is used to scrape away any excess adhesive or paste from the wall surface. This is often done after the wallpaper has been smoothed, in order to create a clean, polished look.
  • Wallpaper seam roller: A wallpaper seam roller is a small, handheld roller that is used to press seams and edges of the wallpaper in place. This helps to create a smooth, even look and eliminates any unsightly bumps or ridges.

Depending on the type of wallpaper you choose, one or more of these tools may be necessary for a successful installation. Be sure to read the instructions carefully to determine which tools are recommended and how to use them properly.

Cutting Tools

Another category of tools that's vital for installing wallpaper is those used for cutting. There are a few different types of cuts that may be necessary, and the right tool for the job can make the process much easier.

Here are some examples of wallpaper cutting tools commonly used:

  • Professional wallpaper scissors: There are several manufacturers of professional wallpaper scissors, and they typically have curved blades that are perfect for making straight cuts. They're also sharp enough to cut through multiple layers of paper at once, which can save time and effort. These scissors are also designed ergonomically to provide a comfortable grip. For anyone who applies wallpaper regularly or professionally, these scissors are the preferred cutting method.
  • Wallpaper knife: A wallpaper knife is a basic tool with a sharp blade that is used for making straight or curved cuts, as well as precision cuts. It's small and easy to handle, making it perfect for tight spaces or detailed work.
  • Wallpaper cutting edge: Similar to a knife but with a flatter blade, a wallpaper cutting edge is perfect for making straight or curved cuts. It's also great for removing old wallpaper.

Again, depending on the specific type of wallpaper you're using, one or more of these cutting tools may be necessary. Make sure to read the instructions to determine which tool is best for the job.

Pasting Tools

Many wallpaper applications require some type of paste or similar adhesive in order to adhere to the wall. There are a few different ways to apply this adhesive, and each has its own set of tools.

Here are some of the most common pasting tools:

  • Pasting brush: One of the single most important tools for any paste-involved wallpaper installation, a pasting brush is simply a brush with long, soft bristles. It's used to apply an even coat of adhesive to the wall surface before hanging the wallpaper. It has an easy grip and a plastic handle, plus a wood body with synthetic bristles that can be replaced when they wear out.
  • Pre-mixed wallpaper paste: In many cases, it's much more convenient to use a pre-mixed wallpaper paste rather than making your own. This type of paste is available at most hardware stores and comes in a variety of packaging options. It's typically a thick, white liquid that needs to be mixed with water before use.
  • Wallpaper hanging set: There are also product sets, such as four-piece wallpaper hanging sets that include a seam roller, a stripping knife, a trimming knife and a wallpaper hanging brush. These can be a great option if you're not sure which tools you'll need or if you want to have everything you need in one kit.
  • Duct tape: Finally, especially if you desire crisp and smooth edges on your wallpaper, you can use duct tape to achieve them. Simply cut a strip of duct tape that is the same width as the edge of your wallpaper, and press it in place. Smooth it out with your fingers or a seam roller for a clean and finished look.

Finally, especially if your walls have old plaster you're looking to smooth over before hanging your wallpaper, you'll need a liner. This is a thin sheet of paper that's used as a base to help the wallpaper adhere and to provide a smooth surface for it to cling to.

There are several types of liners available, from pre-pasted liners to those that need to be pasted before use. There are even vinyl and fabric liners available for those who want a more luxurious look.

Again, always read the specific instructions for your wallpaper to determine which tools and materials are necessary for installation. With the right tools and a little bit of knowledge, you can easily install beautiful wallpaper in your home.
